Abstract

One of the most important challenges for wireless sensor networks is the limitation of energy of sensors, which is directly related to the lifetime of the network. So far, many researchers tried to decrease the energy consumption of sensors, thus increase the lifetime and the efficiency of wireless sensor networks. One of the factors affecting the energy consumption of sensors is their environment. In many existing methods, it is assumed that the sensors send their sensed data at all stages, while the environment or some parts of it may not change from the previous stage, and as a result, some of the sensors may not have new data to provide at all stages. In this paper, an environmentally-aware approach is presented, where only sensors, that have sensed significant changes in their sensed information from previous step, will send their data to the base station. If their changes are insignificant, they will only send small control packets to indicate being alive. The simulation of the proposed algorithm, which is based on the probability of changes in the environment, shows at least 16.63% increase network`s lifetime.
